Google to Open New Code Next Lab at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA

The initiative will provide underrepresented youth in the greater Los Angeles area access
to cutting-edge and emerging technology

INGLEWOOD — Today, Google and Hollywood Park announced an extension of their partnership to bring a new Code Next Lab to Inglewood, CA. Google will be designing, building and opening the new facility, which is a free, immersive computer science education program to develop the next generation of Black, Latino/Hispanic, and Indigenous tech leaders.

Code Next Inglewood will be located at Hollywood Park, a near 300-acre sports and entertainment destination being developed by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke.

“We will realize a thriving LA County when equitable access to quality jobs and career pathways are available for all our residents. I am committed to providing high-road career pathways in information technology and that requires initiatives like Code Next Lab,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell. “Having a Code Next Lab in the 2nd District to serve and mentor students helps expand economic opportunity to the next generation of tech leaders.”

“I’m excited for how Google is showing up for our students,” said Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts. “Code Next will help level the playing field for kids in traditionally underserved areas by providing free programs to give them the tools and tech training necessary to help them gain a competitive advantage for future jobs and to thrive in their chosen careers.”

Although the numbers of Black, Latino/Hispanic, Indigenous and female students taking AP Computer Science (CS) exams have increased in recent years, still only 53% of US high schools offer CS courses and historically marginalized groups continue to be underrepresented in CS education, professions and leadership. Google is committed to working alongside the education community to help ensure every student receives the same opportunities to succeed in computer science.

The new lab will serve students in Inglewood and the greater LA community. This builds on Google, YouTube and Google Cloud’s multi-year partnership with Hollywood Park’s venues, SoFi Stadium and YouTube Theater, and across the mixed-use development by committing the partners to invest in new initiatives that increase access to technology and digital innovation in the community.

“At Hollywood Park, we focus on being stewards of our community,” said Travis Sampson, chief technology officer, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “Our multidimensional partnership with Google is bringing a new Code Next Lab to Hollywood Park, helping strengthen our community impact, educate Inglewood students in cutting-edge technologies, and further Stan Kroenke’s support of the local and surrounding areas.”

Through the Code Next program, students will have access to live coaches, state-of-the-art technical equipment and education curriculum ranging from Javascript programming to UX design. Nationally, 92% of 12th graders who graduate from the Code Next program attend college/higher education institutions, and approximately 88% have gone on to pursue science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) majors. This new space in Inglewood will allow Code Next to grow and expand its reach, welcoming 50 students as part of the first cohort.

“Educating the next generation of tech innovators is critical to America’s future,” said Angela Courtin, vice president of YouTube Marketing and co-site lead of Google’s Playa Vista office. “We’re excited to work with Hollywood Park to bring Google’s Code Next to Inglewood, providing local students access to the tools and training that can help them gain a competitive advantage for future jobs and to thrive in their chosen careers.”

Code Next Inglewood is set to open at Hollywood Park in 2024. This will be Google’s first in Southern California and will join its other locations in New York, Oakland, and Detroit. Code Next is part of Grow with Google, an initiative to ensure that the opportunities created by technology are available to everyone.

Support quotes

“Google’s Code Next Inglewood is an exciting and tangible investment that will help ensure California’s tech industry looks more like California,” said Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). “These new opportunities for free computer science education will make a difference by focusing on reaching young people in our underserved communities. I applaud this partnership that will uncover and develop a rich and diverse workforce of the future and allow California to continue to grow its global tech leadership.”

“With California in the midst of a lean budget year, we need the continued advocacy of companies like Google that are finding innovative ways to support local communities. The announcement of a new Code Next Lab for Inglewood is going to help students in our community not just remain competitive, but surge to the top in whatever field they choose to pursue in the future.” – Assemblymember Tina McKinnor (D-Inglewood)

“We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to harness the power of computing education to help shape their future, and Code Next embodies that commitment by equipping our youth with both the skills and the mentoring relationships needed to thrive in the digital age,” said Shanika Hope, director of Education for Social Impact, Google. “Inglewood is rich in history and tech talent, and we’re excited to collaborate with community leaders to foster innovation and empower Inglewood’s tech trailblazers.”

(October 21, 2023) – SoFi Stadium and four-time Super Bowl Champion Rob Gronkowski entered into a multi-year agreement to rename LA Bowl, SoFi Stadium’s owned and operated college bowl game, LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk. The bowl game, which was previously named the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl, will see Gronkowski taking over hosting duties from late night host Jimmy Kimmel. LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk is an annual collegiate football bowl game held at SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, in Inglewood, Calif. The game features the Mountain West’s No. 1 selection versus the Pac-12’s No. 5 selection, after CFP selection.

Bringing his unique style and flair back to college football, Gronkowski will serve as the official host of the game. He’ll kick off game day with a specialized grand entrance, preside over the coin toss and close out the night with the trophy presentation. At the trophy presentation, Gronkowski will present the winning team with the bowl game’s one-of-a-kind LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk championship belt. Gronkowski is also developing a special performance for fans in attendance on December 16 and more details will be shared at a later date. The Gronkowski family business, Gronk Fitness, and Chris Gronkowski and his brother’s company, Ice Shaker, will also be partnering with LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk. Gronk Fitness and Ice Shaker will be featured throughout bowl week and during the game.

This partnership further cements Gronkowski’s presence and influence as a leader in sports marketing, and will focus on expanding his reach, as well as the family brands, into college sports. The agreement marks a return to the LA Bowl for Gronkowski. During his college career at the University of Arizona, Gronkowski played in the then Las Vegas Bowl; its conference match-up was relocated to Los Angeles and renamed LA Bowl in 2020.

“Football has brought me so many incredible opportunities, and I’m thrilled to return to college football as the host of my very own bowl game,” said Rob Gronkowski. “We are going to light up college football bowl season. This game is going to be epic, so I better see everyone at the LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk at SoFi Stadium on December 16!”

In 2008, the Mountain West sent Brigham Young University (BYU), their second-place team and the No. 16th nationally ranked team according to USA Today’s Football Coaches Poll that year, to face off against the University of Arizona’s Wildcats. Gronkowski and the Arizona Wildcats took down BYU, 31-21, with Chris Gronkowski catching a 24-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to help cement Arizona’s lead. At the time, this win marked the school’s first bowl victory in a decade and first winning season in nine years.

Pacheco Headlines in LA for the First Time on Nov 18 at YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park

Super-Middleweight star takes on Marcelo Coceres at YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park

Inglewood, Calif. (September 15, 2023) – Diego Pacheco, one of the hottest young fighters in the sport, will headline at home for the first time in his blossoming career when he takes on Marcelo Coceres for the WBO International and USWBC Super-Middleweight titles at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on November 18, live worldwide on DAZN.

Tickets for Diego Pacheco vs Marcelo Coceres are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com/ and matchroomboxing.com. For more information, visit YouTubeTheater.com.

Pacheco (19-0 16 KOs) was at his scintillating best in his last outing in July where he blitzed the dangerous Manuel Gallegos inside four rounds in Monterrey, Mexico – ending matters with a vicious attack after flooring Gallegos in the fourth with a trademark bodyshot and became the first man to stop the Mexican later in the round.

That was a second headline turn for the rangy South LA man having previously pummeled Jack Cullen into submission again in four rounds in Liverpool, England, in April, and now the 23-year-old earns a shorter trip to top the bill, doing so at YouTube Theater, a 6,000-seat venue situated under the same roof canopy as SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, where he grew up.

“I cannot wait to be headlining at home November 18 at YouTube Theater,” said Pacheco. “I am looking forward to making a statement and delivering another great performance for all my hometown fans.”

“YouTube Theater is thrilled to host Diego Pacheco’s first headlining fight for its second boxing event at the venue,” said Adolfo Romero, vice president, programming and booking, YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park. “Boxing is an important part of our programming story here at Hollywood Park, and we look forward to a great fight night.”

Standing in Pacheco’s way of another impressive showing at Super-Middleweight is former World title challenger Coceres (32-5-1 18 KOs). The Argentine returns to the city of his biggest night, where he met WBO ruler Billy Joe Saunders for the World title in November 2019, and the 32-year-old is set to provide Pacheco with the biggest test of his career to date.

“November 18, in his backyard, this is what warriors do,” said Coceres. “I have a lot of respect for Pacheco, he’s a good fighter, but he’s still young and he has time. This is my time now.

I’ve been here before. I’ve been to war. Let’s see how the young boy does when his back is against the wall.

“I’m bringing everything into this fight. I can’t afford another loss at this point in my career. This is make or break and I’m leaving everything I have in the ring come November 18.”

“Diego is a superstar in the making – and I am thrilled that he’s headlining at YouTube Theater in his LA home,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “This young man continues to cut through the opposition with power and precision, and I believe that Los Angeles has a new future sporting icon on its hands – and this is going to be the perfect night for Diego to show just that.”

Inglewood’s Residency Art Gallery Makes a New Home in Hollywood Park

The new location will open on September 23 with The New Contemporaries, Vol 3, the third edition of the gallery’s flagship exhibition series

Inglewood, Calif. (September 7, 2023) – Residency Art Gallery is pleased to present The New Contemporaries, Vol 3, the inaugural exhibition at the gallery’s new location at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California. The New Contemporaries, Vol 3 will be on view from September 23rd through November 10th, 2023, with an opening reception taking place on Saturday, September 23rd from 4–9pm, co-hosted by The Los Angeles TimesImage Magazine. Hollywood Park is a near 300-acre mixed-use development being built by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke.

The latest addition to South Central Los Angeles’ new cultural destination, Residency’s new home within the hub of Hollywood Park is poised to offer the neighboring community greater access to expanded arts and cultural programming. The gallery will continue to host exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, and other public programs, affirming their mission to uplift BIPOC artists and serve the historical South Central Los Angeles community. Residency’s Hollywood Park location will now serve as their main gallery, with their original location at 310 East Queen St. to be transformed into Residency’s Project Space, with programming to be announced.

“Since 2016, Residency has always intended to uplift artists of color and empower our South Central community with an art space that we can call our own,” says Rick Garzon, founder and executive director of Residency Art Gallery. “Our new space and the possibilities being created through the Hollywood Park development, will allow Residency to continue on this path, ushering in a new chapter for the gallery, our exhibiting artists and the community as a whole.”

Residency Art Gallery will be the second tenant to open within Hollywood Park’s newly opened retail area. The retail district opened in July 2023 with Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas and will continue to expand in a phased approach as new tenants open their doors to the public. Hollywood Park will feature up to 890,000 square feet of retail, with its Phase 1 offering reaching 500,000 square feet.

“Residency Art Gallery is a mainstay in Inglewood and now an important part of our Hollywood Park community,” said Jason Witt, senior director, Community Affairs and Engagement, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “We’re excited to bring the incredible art and culture exhibitions featured at the Residency Art Gallery to Hollywood Park for community access year-round.”

The third installment of The New Contemporaries—Residency’s flagship exhibition series, showcasing new commissions from emerging artists based across the United States—features work by 18 rising talents: Edmund Arevalo, Jonni Cheatwood, Cash Cooper, Maya Fuji, Daniela Garcia Hamilton, Rugiyatou Jallow, Gbenga Komolafe, Spandita Malik, Will Maxen, Nikkolos Mohammed, Kariny Padilla, Ronnie Robinson, Jacob Rochester, LaRissa Rogers, Esperanza Rosas (Runsy), Kristofferson San Pablo, Ashley Teamer, Michael Tran.

The works on view spotlight the various modes through which Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian artists define self-authorship in resistance to fetishization, commodification, and appropriation within the mainstream media landscape. Reflecting upon their lived experiences and positionality, the participating artists have been tasked to represent how their practices embody their expression and movement within our nation’s evolving political landscape, whether through self-care, protection, spirituality, or protest.

The exhibition’s opening celebration will include a private VIP reception co-hosted by Super, a multidisciplinary creative and learning community dedicated to Black and Latinx artists. For the public reception hosted in collaboration with LA Times Image Magazine, Residency will welcome a special performance by artist Autumn Breon titled “Still Here”, whose practice investigates the visual vocabulary of liberation through a queer Black feminist lens. Also taking place will be DJ sets by Rush Davis, Fredrique, Gbenga, and Terrell Brooks, with additional programming to be announced.

ABOUT RESIDENCY ART GALLERY

Founded in 2016, Residency Art Gallery is one of very few Black-owned commercial art galleries created with the purpose of serving historical South Central Los Angeles and the city’s communities of color. Residency Art Gallery, celebrates contemporary artists that continue to make projects for their own communities. The artists exhibited at Residency tell multifaceted stories that speak directly to their community’s history, identity and resilience, yet these stories are often engulfed and misappropriated within the predominantly White, affluent and largely inaccessible art spaces in other regions of the city. Residency Art Gallery answers the simple question, “How can work made by artists of color be seen by the intended audience in their own neighborhoods?”
